Solar water heating, biogas systems, photovoltaic installations, and entrepreneurship—these are just some of the achievements of the renewable energy project in Kisumu, Kenya, all realized in just one year.
The solar project goes into the second round!

Our project
Our goal has always been sustainability, building a capable team to maintain and grow these systems. The highlight in 2024 was the installation of a 5KW solar system at the Angola Health Center, providing 24/7 access to critical medical services and reducing energy costs.
Additional milestones include:
• A 200-liter solar water heater at Angola Health Center
• A 150W solar system at Newland Permaculture Farm
• 2000W solar LED streetlights at Mayenya Community Center
To enhance practical learning, a workshop was built where students can gain hands-on experience. Our trainees have already put their skills to use by repairing solar lamps through the DREAMS program and field attachments with local organizations.
Our trainees
In 2024, 15 passionate students joined the Mwanga Mpya renewable energy project. By year-end, these trainees were fully equipped with the skills to design, install, and maintain solar PV systems. After passing the NITA accreditation exams, they are now certified professionals ready to ensure the ongoing success of our work. Four exceptional trainees were selected to become master trainers and attended a workshop at our partner organization, Iruwa, to deepen their knowledge.

Our future
Looking ahead, Mwanga Mpya, in collaboration with Urbis Foundation and Austrian Embassy Nairobi is expanding its impact by offering advanced courses in energy storage and wind energy, as well as green entrepreneurship training to help graduates start sustainable energy businesses. We also plan to build a strong alumni network to mentor new trainees and promote renewable energy in communities.
By equipping communities with renewable energy skills, Mwanga Mpya is addressing energy poverty, creating jobs, and supporting Kenya’s transition to sustainable energy. This project is lighting the way to a greener, brighter future for Kisumu County and beyond.
