The ongoing heavy rains across the country have not spared Kolwa East and Miwani Wards where we implement our programs. As a result, over 2500 orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) and their caregivers have been directly affected.
The current situation is sincere
Whole families have been displaced, their livestock killed or relocated, their shelters completely or partially destroyed, and their crops swept away by the raging floods.
Some of these families have been forced to seek alternative shelters in schools, churches and market centers while others have been left with no alternative but to spend within the houses for fear of their properties being stolen.
The most affected segments of the population are generally women and children but specifically expectant and lactating mothers who cannot go for medical services, children under 5 years, the elderly, those with special abilities and the sick.
A transect walk across Kolwa East reveals a situation that is pathetic and life threatening as already three people including one child have been swept away by the floods. One wonders how the families will cope with this situation should help delay to come their way. Already, about 25 houses have collapsed and several in need of renovation even as water levels continue to rise as at this evening.
Since the affected areas are land locked and access roads badly destroyed, the families cannot get access to their basic needs and their normal lifes altered. There is need to mitigate the effects of the disaster, first in the short term. To this end, some of the items which are needed urgently include: Canvas, (Tarpaulin), Mosquito nets, Blankets, Water treating chemicals, Mobilet, food, sanitary pads etc. Of utmost importance is the psychosocial support for the affected OVCs and counseling services for the caregivers.
