We collaborated with Community Media Trust (CoMeT), to identify 45 vulnerable girls and young women to join the DREAMS challenge. CoMeT implements the project and supports the girls in creating relevant, community-friendly media. Our Kenyan FICE/Make Me Smile Team joined other FICE Africa Members, coming together in Johannesburg, South Africa to work on the new objectives of the network, addressing the urgent issues that are facing the continent over the next generations. Although only four member Countries were represented (South Africa, Zambia, Lesotho and Kenya), together, the team managed to ellaborate a comprehensive strategy to improve the quality of Child and Youth Care work-, Standards and Policy across Africa. A Visit at Nyaimbo Adult Learning Centre which is the most aggressive and Adult School in Kisumu East. The centre has more than 40 Adult learners with the main focus on: – Farming methods – Will writing – Basic English for adults – Basic mathematics for adults – Environment and health – Civic and social ethics The Learners can now write wills for their children, engage in simple business mathematics and has hopes in enrolling for the Kenya National Examinations. These days, many children were happy to get presents, which will support their educational career. All students and pupils received a package with school materials and a schoolbag. The girls further received washable sanitary towels, which will allow them to visit school also during their menstruation. Unfortunately many young women still stay at home during their period instead of attending classes, because of shame or lack of money to buy sanitary towels. The number of children attending our Children’s Clubs is increasing at a very interesting rates. The Childrenclubs serve to the local expansion of our Safe Park and advocate against stigmatisation and discrimination. The children get encouraged to open themselves, share challenges, interact with and learn from each others, figure out their talents as well as getting in touch with their rights as a child. They are the most important people in our Organization; they work within the life space of children and communities, they ensure that all the children report to school, progress and transition to next levels, they follow up on health and care cases, they do house economic strengthening, they monitor the hygiene of the children, they face rough times, both physical and emotional, and finaly they need care, encouragement and Motivation. We have had the honour to be visited by the Minister of Health and the Minister of Education, Youth, Culture & Social Services of Kisumu County and to present them our Community Health Centre, the first Safe Park in Kenya and our OVC/Child and Youth Care Program. They left not only overwhelmed from the impressions but promised that they will support our projects by providing the “Beyond Zero” mobile Clinic, an ambulance and Medication for our upcoming Free Medical Camp providing staff and medication to the Health Centre immeditately when it is complete, promoting the Professionalization of Child and Youth Care […]
